Sony introduces AI upscaling to base PS5; Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei are first games to implement new tech
Sony Interactive Entertainment has announced Quick Spectral Super Resolution (QSSR), a new AI-powered upscaling technology for the base PlayStation 5. Developed through collaboration with AMD, QSSR features a streamlined neural network architecture hand-tuned to maximize PS5 performance, delivering both improved image quality and enhanced frame rates.
This expansion of AI upscaling technology to the standard PS5 represents a shift toward making advanced graphics capabilities available across PlayStation’s broader installed base. The more advanced PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) remains exclusive to the PS5 Pro, which Sony continues to position as the “gold standard” of the technology.
Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei will be among the first games to implement QSSR, demonstrating rapid developer adoption of the new upscaling tools for upcoming PlayStation releases.
