Stephen Colbert’s Lord of the Rings Movie Still in Development after Paramount-Warner Bros. Merger
Stephen Colbert’s Lord of the Rings movie project remains in active development despite concerns raised by recent industry consolidation. In March 2026, legendary Lord of the Rings trilogy director Peter Jackson announced the new film in partnership with Stephen Colbert and his son Peter McGee, a screenwriter. Philippa Boyens, who worked on the screenplays for both the Lord of the Rings and Hobbit film trilogies, also joined the creative team.
The project, tentatively titled The Lord of the Rings: Shadows of the Past, received the green light from New Line and Warner Bros. However, on October 4, 2026, reports from Knight Edge Media suggested the film had been “paused” following the completed Paramount-Warner Bros. merger, raising questions among fans about its future.
According to follow-up reporting, the project has not been shelved and continues moving forward through development. While the merger between the two major entertainment conglomerates has affected numerous entertainment properties, Colbert’s Lord of the Rings adaptation appears to have successfully navigated the corporate restructuring and remains in active development.
