GameStop, other retailers to sell used PlayStation 5 Pro units for 66 percent over MSRP
GameStop and third-party resellers have announced significant price increases for used PlayStation 5 Pro consoles, pricing pre-owned units at $1,399.99 for digital models or $1,499.99 for disc-equipped versions. This represents approximately a $500 premium over Sony’s $899–900 MSRP for new units. GameStop Pro members receive a modest discount, bringing the digital price down to $1,329.99.
The price hike, which took effect October 16th, appears directly tied to severe stock constraints and overwhelming demand for Sony’s premium console. New PS5 Pro units are currently unavailable or sold out at most major retailers including GameStop, Amazon, Best Buy, Walmart, and Sony’s own store. Third-party resellers across these platforms have adopted similar pricing strategies.
While GameStop has not officially commented on the reasoning, industry observers attribute the unprecedented markup to capitalizing on scarcity. Some have characterized the practice as scalping. The high resale prices effectively create a barrier to entry, potentially limiting the console’s audience to high-income enthusiasts. This could impact developer targeting for games optimized to leverage the PS5 Pro’s enhanced graphical performance at higher resolutions.
