Gears of War: E-Day review — terrific shooting buoys a sluggish campaign
The Coalition’s Gears of War: E-Day, released October 6, 2026, is a prequel to the classic third-person cover-based shooter franchise, priced at $70/£60. Published by Xbox Game Studios, this latest entry marks a significant evolution for the series with notable gameplay improvements and new mechanics.
One of the most striking additions is the introduction of a jump button for protagonist Marcus Fenix—a fundamental departure from the franchise’s traditionally grounded, cover-based approach. This mechanic opens up new tactical possibilities and adds verticality to the combat experience.
According to PC Gamer’s review, E-Day delivers exceptional shooting mechanics that represent the best the franchise has ever felt to play. The refined gunplay and combat systems showcase considerable polish and refinement, setting a new standard for the series’ trademark third-person action.
However, despite these mechanical strengths, the game is hampered by a sluggish campaign that struggles to maintain momentum. The review suggests that while the moment-to-moment shooting is excellent, the broader campaign structure and pacing undermine the gameplay’s potential.
The review was tested on an Asus ROG Zephyrus G14, with Steam Deck compatibility currently listed as TBA.
