Gears of War: E-Day studio finds a way to get more performance from Xbox Series S - one that other Xbox games could probably use
Gears of War: E-Day developer The Coalition has discovered an innovative optimization technique to improve performance on Xbox Series S. As a first-party Xbox title, the game must perform well across both Series S and Series X, which presents significant technical challenges given the Series S’s more limited hardware.
The primary constraint is memory: Gears of War: E-Day features densely-detailed environments that require substantial RAM resources. The Xbox Series S has 10GB of GDDR6 RAM compared to Series X’s more generous allocation, making memory management critical. To work around this limitation, The Coalition has developed a solution that leverages one of the Series S’s strengths: its ultra-fast NVMe SSD storage drive.
Rather than attempting to fit all necessary data in the console’s limited RAM pool, the developer is offloading some data onto the SSD. This approach takes advantage of the console’s fast storage capabilities to effectively expand the available memory for game assets and environments. The technique allows The Coalition to maintain the game’s visual fidelity and environmental detail despite the Series S’s hardware constraints.
According to reporting by Digital Foundry, this solution could have broader implications for the Xbox ecosystem. The technique represents a model that other Xbox developers might adopt to optimize their own games for Series S, potentially enabling more ambitious ports and new titles on the console.
