Evangelion Creator Returns to Direct Another Sci-Fi Anime Classic

Hideaki Anno, the visionary director behind the Neon Genesis Evangelion franchise, will direct a new anime film for the Space Battleship Yamato series. The project, titled Space Battleship Yamato √2199, is being produced by Anno’s own Studio Khara in collaboration with Production I.G.

Space Battleship Yamato stands as one of the most influential anime and science fiction properties ever created, debuting in October 1974 (known as Star Blazers in the United States). Over 50 years later, the franchise continues to expand its legacy. In 2024, the franchise launched a series of seven planned remake films, beginning with Be Forever Yamato: Rebel 3199.

Anno’s directorial project appears to represent a distinct creative approach within the broader Yamato universe. His involvement brings significant prestige and artistic vision to the storied franchise, leveraging his decades of experience in groundbreaking sci-fi anime storytelling.
