Supermassive Games suffers layoffs as more than 70 developers seem to have left the company this week
Supermassive Games has completed layoffs affecting more than 70 staff members this week, following through on redundancy consultation plans announced in August. The departures included developers, artists, producers, QA specialists, and operations staff across the studio.
The horror game developer, known for titles such as Until Dawn and The Dark Pictures Anthology, had previously warned of the planned reductions. In an August statement, the studio stated: “We have made the difficult decision to begin a redundancy consultation process, which we anticipate will result in the loss of up to 75 of our colleagues. This is a necessary step to ensure the sustainability of our company.”
The consultation process has now concluded, with the layoffs occurring this week. Several departing employees shared news of their exits through professional networks, with Supermassive veteran Frank Tindle noting on LinkedIn that the departing staff members’ quality would make them valuable additions to other studios.
The layoffs arrive shortly after the release of Directive 8020 earlier this year. The studio cited sustainability concerns as the primary reason for the reductions, a refrain increasingly common across the gaming industry as studios navigate economic challenges and market pressures.
