I spent an hour playing Switch Sports Resort and my favourite mini-game involves the Switch 2’s least-loved gimmick: mouse controls
Nintendo Switch Sports Resort, the fifth installment in the popular sports franchise, has been hands-on demonstrated at Gamescom 2026. Exclusive to Nintendo Switch 2, the game combines traditional competitive sports events with free-roaming exploration across Wuhu Island. Preview sessions reveal a diverse roster of activities including returning favorites like bowling, boxing, and table tennis alongside new additions such as skateboarding, archery, thumb wrestling, power cruising, and prop plane experiences.
Roughly half of the game’s sports are returning from previous titles in the series, while the other half introduce new gameplay mechanics. Notably, some activities support the Switch 2’s mouse control functionality, with skateboarding highlighted as an enjoyable experience using this often-overlooked feature. The exploratory elements and hybrid competitive-exploration approach add depth to the overall package.
Despite these enhancements, critics note that the novelty of the sports franchise has begun to wear thin following the cultural phenomenon established by the original Wii Sports. While Switch Sports Resort shows promise with its varied activities and exploratory options, it largely delivers more of the same formula from previous installments. The game continues Nintendo’s tradition of creating accessible motion-based sports experiences, though whether it will achieve comparable cultural impact remains uncertain.
