Thatgamepublisher wants to sign mobile games playing in “meaningful emotional territory”

Thatgamecompany has established a new publishing label, Thatgamepublisher, dedicated to funding and publishing mobile games that explore “meaningful emotional territory.” According to SJ Xue, the studio’s VP of growth and corporate development, the label offers comprehensive support including funding, production planning, platform and launch strategy, marketing, community support, and long-term intellectual property development.

The publishing label operates without platform restrictions, though its initial focus is on mobile games. Notably, Thatgamepublisher is not seeking games that replicate the style of Thatgamecompany’s acclaimed Sky. Instead, the selection criteria prioritizes whether a game reaches for meaningful emotional depth and leverages interactivity to create emotional connections with players. This approach emphasizes artistic vision over genre, scale, or platform.

Developers of all team sizes are eligible to submit projects for publishing consideration, potentially enabling both established studios and smaller independent teams to partner with Thatgamecompany’s new venture. The label represents an expansion of Thatgamecompany’s influence beyond its own game development, positioning the studio as a curator and supporter of emotionally resonant gaming experiences across the broader industry.
