Ubisoft Will Reportedly Try Relaunching Watch Dogs: Legion With a Director’s Cut

Ubisoft is planning to relaunch Watch Dogs: Legion as a Director’s Cut in the first half of 2027, according to reports from Insider Gaming and confirmed by IGN through its own sources. The original game, released in 2020, received a mixed reception and has since been dormant, with no new entry in the Watch Dogs franchise currently in development.

Watch Dogs: Legion was notable for its departure from the series’ traditional single-protagonist format. Instead of playing as a predetermined character, players could recruit and control any NPC from its virtual recreation of post-Brexit London. This innovative concept allowed players to enlist random citizens into their hacker crew, with each character possessing unique traits and vulnerabilities—including potential permadeath scenarios, such as elderly characters suffering cardiac events.

While the core mechanic was ambitious and initially appealed to players as revolutionary, the game’s execution fell short of expectations. The experience of playing as procedurally-varied NPCs rather than a developed protagonist divided the fanbase, and the actual gameplay did not live up to the innovative premise.

The planned Director’s Cut represents Ubisoft’s attempt to salvage the franchise by revisiting and refining the base game rather than developing an entirely new sequel. This strategy suggests the publisher is banking on improvements to Legion’s systems, content, and overall polish to generate renewed interest. With no traditional new Watch Dogs game on the horizon, the Director’s Cut appears to be Ubisoft’s near-term commitment to the franchise.
