Wizards of the Coast Union Demands Company Stop Pushing Generative AI
Employees at Wizards of the Coast have unionized in expanded numbers, with the Dungeons & Dragons team and the Magic: The Gathering development teams joining the UWOTC-CWA union on October 8. The union, which originally formed when the Magic: The Gathering Arena team unionized in April 2026, has now grown to encompass multiple major franchises within the company, including Team X, the development team behind both Magic: The Gathering and Dual Masters.
The expanded union has issued a formal letter of demands to Hasbro and Wizards of the Coast leadership, with a primary focus on stopping the company’s push toward generative AI. This marks a significant stance by the workforce against the company’s artificial intelligence strategy at a time when AI adoption is becoming increasingly prevalent across the gaming industry.
The union has set a deadline of October 13 for Wizards of the Coast to voluntarily recognize the expanded union unit. This labor action represents a major development within one of the gaming industry’s most prominent companies, affecting teams behind some of the most iconic gaming properties including Magic: The Gathering and Dungeons & Dragons.
