Insomniac Finally Lets Players Toggle Wolverine’s Story-Related Scent Trails on and Off With a ‘Hint’ Button

Insomniac Games has released a patch for Marvel’s Wolverine that adds player control over the game’s contentious scent trail feature. Released on October 6, the update introduces a toggleable ‘Hint’ button mapped to R3 on the PlayStation 5 controller, allowing players to enable or disable the story-related scent trails at will.

The decision comes after months of community feedback criticizing the scent trails as overly hand-holding and restrictive to exploration. Insomniac confirmed on social media that the change was a direct response to player complaints. This marks the latest iteration of the studio’s efforts to address concerns surrounding the feature.

Previously, Insomniac had already made adjustments to the scent trails system, including options to disable them for collectible hunts and reducing their visual opacity. However, players remained vocal about wanting complete control over the trails during main story sequences, prompting the developer to implement this toggle option.

The scent trails feature, which helps guide players toward objectives, had become one of the more debated aspects of Marvel’s Wolverine’s design. While some players appreciated the navigation assistance, others felt it detracted from the sense of discovery and independent exploration. The ability to toggle scent trails represents a win for player agency, allowing different playstyles to coexist.
