Xbox Was At An “All Time Low,” But Is Now Growing Again CEO Says Without Providing Any Real Evidence
Xbox CEO Asha Sharma addressed staff in an internal town hall, announcing that the gaming division has begun “returning to growth” following a period of “freefall.” However, the claims lack concrete evidence or specific metrics.
Sharma attributed Xbox’s previous decline primarily to the Game Pass subscription strategy, which strained the business’s financial sustainability despite major investments like the $69 billion Activision Blizzard acquisition that added Call of Duty to the service. The misalignment between acquisition costs and subscription revenue created significant losses.
The CEO cited several positive indicators without specifics: growth claimed at “2 to 3 times” previous levels, titles including Gears of War: E-Day, Minecraft Dungeons 2, and World of Warcraft: Forever allegedly having “strong starts,” stabilized player engagement hours, and a reported 30% increase in positive sentiment year-over-year.
These statements accompany Xbox’s major 2026 restructuring, including approximately 2,000 staff layoffs and studio closures. Strategic changes include removing Call of Duty from Game Pass with a subscription price cut, renewed commitment to exclusive titles, and increased marketing investment for Xbox Series X|S consoles.
Sharma also referenced the upcoming “Project Helix” (Gen-10 platform) as part of the recovery strategy. While presenting optimistic projections, the absence of verifiable data—such as subscriber counts, revenue figures, or engagement metrics—makes the recovery claims difficult to validate independently. The announcements appear primarily designed to reassure employees amid organizational upheaval.
