What’s Next For Halo Under Activision? Probably Not The Endless

Activision has taken control of the Halo franchise, marking a significant restructuring of the series’ development. The next mainline Halo game will be developed by a new team under Activision’s leadership, while Halo Studios (formerly 343 Industries) was reorganized into a skeleton crew focused on maintaining existing titles. The reorganization resulted in 268 layoffs from the studio.

A small 30-person team remains within Halo Studios to oversee previously released titles, including the recent Halo: Campaign Evolved. This remaining team has one final update planned before further layoffs, featuring the long-requested Firefight and Theater modes. After this update ships, it remains unclear what the studio’s future role will be.

The handoff to Activision comes as the Halo universe’s planned Endless enemy faction has been fully revealed in recent comics or media. However, with development now under Activision’s purview, the future integration and role of the Endless faction in upcoming games is uncertain. The transition marks a major shift for a franchise that has been under 343 Industries’ stewardship for over a decade, and comes amid broader industry consolidation and restructuring.
