Sony is reportedly plotting to revive classic PlayStation games, starting with a new Ape Escape from the developers behind Sonic Mania

Sony is reportedly reviving classic PlayStation franchises, starting with a new Ape Escape game in development at Evening Star, the independent studio behind the critically acclaimed Sonic Mania and Penny’s Big Breakaway. The project was first reported by veteran game journalist Jeff Gerstmann on his podcast, with corroboration from Video Games Chronicle.

Founded in 2018 by Sonic Mania lead designer Christian Whitehead, Evening Star has established itself as a skilled steward of classic gaming IP. While the specific nature of the new Ape Escape project remains unclear—whether it will be a remake, remaster, or entirely new game—Gerstmann indicated the title is still in early stages of development and not close to release. He noted discussions about the project began approximately a year ago.

Ape Escape, which defined early PlayStation gaming and established itself as one of Sony’s most recognizable franchises, has remained dormant for over 15 years outside of a brief cameo appearance in Astro Bot. The revival represents part of a broader Sony initiative to resurrect its extensive catalog of dormant IP, with reports also suggesting a Killzone remaster or remake in development. This strategy reflects growing industry interest in revisiting beloved franchises through partnerships with accomplished independent developers.
