The Next Gears Of War Game Probably Won’t Need 7 Years To Cook

Gears of War: E-Day launched this week on Xbox Series X|S and PC, marking the franchise’s return after a seven-year gap since Gears 5’s 2019 release. Set during the events of Emergence Day, the new entry arrives as the first major Gears installment in nearly two decades.

In response to concerns about development timelines, The Coalition studio head Mike Crump stated that E-Day was designed to lay groundwork for faster future development. Crump promised that the next Gears game will not require the lengthy development cycle that preceded E-Day’s release, positioning the new title as a “great foundation” for future chapters in the franchise.

However, the launch comes amid significant uncertainty at the studio. Internal reports indicate that Coalition staff members are anxious about potential layoffs following the game’s release, reflecting broader concerns about ongoing staff reductions across Xbox. Sources described unusual anxiety at the studio, with staff expressing reluctance to celebrate the milestone until three months post-launch to ensure job security. Some employees anticipate further organizational changes or potential acquisition by other major publishers later in 2026.

Despite these workplace concerns, The Coalition remains publicly committed to the franchise’s continued development, with E-Day positioned as a foundation for more frequent releases in the Gears of War series going forward.
