Gears of War E-Day Is a ‘Natural Choice to Be an Exclusive’ – Studio Head Mike Crump Claims Series Carries the Banner for Xbox

Gears of War: E-Day launched this week as an Xbox exclusive, despite having been pulled from a planned PlayStation 5 release earlier in the year. In defending the exclusivity decision, The Coalition Studio Head Mike Crump told the BBC that the franchise’s long association with Xbox made the choice natural, stating “Gears has been an exclusive franchise to Xbox for 20 years now. It’s sort of entwined deeply with the brand.”

However, this claim appears contradicted by the fact that Gears of War: Reloaded launched on PS5 last year, meaning the franchise is no longer exclusively tied to Xbox. The decision to make E-Day an Xbox exclusive may also be questioned from a commercial perspective, as analysts suggest the game would likely achieve significantly higher sales figures if released across PlayStation platforms.

The exclusivity arrangement underscores ongoing platform competition in the industry, where major game publishers use high-profile releases to drive hardware adoption. While The Coalition maintains the choice aligns with the franchise’s heritage, the reasoning highlights tensions between brand loyalty and broader market accessibility.
