Unity unveils Unity Spark, an prompt-based tool for Google’s AI games platform

Google has unveiled Playground, a new browser-based experimental gaming platform that enables users to create, play, and share custom games using AI-powered natural language prompts. Available immediately in the US for users 18 and older at playground.google, the platform requires no coding experience, allowing anyone to bring game ideas to life through text-based prompts alone.

Users begin by selecting basic parameters—such as whether the game is 2D or 3D, its genre, and whether it’s single-player or multiplayer—then use conversational prompts to describe desired game mechanics, art style, and other design elements. The platform also allows users to upload custom assets, which AI tools can transform to match the intended style. Created games are playable on both mobile devices and PC, and can be shared with others.

As part of a strategic partnership, Unity has introduced Unity Spark, a more advanced version built on the Unity engine specifically for Playground. Designed for professional-level development, Unity Spark offers expanded creation capabilities including advanced mechanics, high-fidelity 3D graphics, and the full flexibility of the Unity runtime. The tool will launch in beta later this year, also in a browser-based format without requiring downloads.

Google positions Playground as democratizing game creation by removing traditional gatekeeping and lowering barriers to entry. While the initial launch focuses on Playground’s AI platform, access is expected to expand to Google One subscribers. Google has indicated that rollout to regions outside the US will follow.

Notably, Unity Spark will leverage multiple generative AI models rather than exclusively relying on Google’s AI technology, allowing developers to benefit from diverse AI capabilities in the game creation process.
