Gravity Well lays off more than 40 developers after losing its funding

Gravity Well, an independent studio founded by former Respawn Entertainment developers, has laid off more than 40 members of its team following the loss of its funding partner. The studio’s three leaders—Drew McCoy, Jon Shiring, and Mon Saetern—announced the decision via LinkedIn, stating that the company lost its primary funding source over the summer and has been unable to secure replacement funding despite ongoing efforts.

The layoffs represent the majority of Gravity Well’s workforce. According to the studio’s statement, all affected employees were kept informed throughout the funding crisis and were aware of potential job losses if the company failed to secure new financial backing. The studio has not yet announced its next steps beyond continuing to search for a new funding partner.

The closure marks another instance of an independent studio laying off its workforce before releasing a title to market. Gravity Well’s in-development project remains unshipped, adding to a growing list of cancelled or indefinitely delayed projects following recent industry layoffs.
