Footage From Canceled Perfect Dark Reboot Surfaces, Showing Off Fruit Physics and Parkour
Gameplay footage from Xbox’s canceled Perfect Dark reboot has surfaced online, reportedly sourced from a VFX developer’s portfolio. The approximately two-minute clip showcases various stages of the game’s development, including destructible environments, sci-fi weapons, parkour-heavy chase sequences, and physics demonstrations involving destructible fruit props.
The Initiative, the Los Angeles-based studio developing the reboot, was shut down in July 2025 as part of a wave of Microsoft layoffs. Founded in 2018, the studio had been creating the project with support from Crystal Dynamics, which also experienced significant staff reductions during the same period. The Perfect Dark reboot was originally announced in 2020 but never reached completion.
The leaked footage provides a rare glimpse into the project’s pre-cancellation state, revealing early grey-box gunplay testing, fleshed-out level designs, and ability mechanics. The footage emphasizes environmental destruction and physics systems, with extensive testing of weapon behavior against various surfaces and materials. This development footage marks one of the few public views of The Initiative’s work before the studio’s closure.
