s1mple Likely to Miss Singapore Major After VRS Rule Change
Valve has implemented a rule change to the Valve Regional Standings (VRS) that will likely prevent professional Counter-Strike player Oleksandr “s1mple” Kostyliev from competing at the upcoming PGL Singapore Major. The change introduces restrictions on “region swaps,” preventing teams from immediately representing a new region at a Major following a regional transfer.
The modification addresses a controversial practice in competitive Counter-Strike, where teams have exploited region-swapping as a loophole to secure Major invitations. Several organizations have leveraged this strategy by transferring to regions with less competitive qualifying fields, allowing them to gain tournament slots they otherwise wouldn’t have accessed. This has drawn criticism from the community, with many viewing the practice as representing teams that aren’t genuinely invested in their adopted regions.
This season, s1mple’s BC.Game roster and Sashi Esports both pursued region changes in attempts to qualify for the Singapore Major through the Asian VRS qualification pathway after their prospects of qualifying from their original regions diminished. However, Valve’s new rulebook implementation now blocks this strategy by preventing immediate Major participation following a regional change.
The rule change reflects Valve’s effort to maintain competitive integrity within the Regional Standings system and ensure teams genuinely commit to regions rather than opportunistically moving to chase Major qualification.
