Sony Seemingly Ends VR Ambitions by Selling Patents to Meta

Sony has begun selling its virtual reality patent portfolio to Meta, signaling an apparent end to the console manufacturer’s VR ambitions. The transaction involves the transfer of 419 global patents related to XR headset technology, marking a significant retreat from the VR market.

The patent transfer was first identified in regulatory filings reported by ZDNet Korea and corroborated by Road to VR. Between June and September 2026 alone, 43 US-specific patents changed hands between the two companies, with additional global properties included in the overall portfolio transfer.

This move represents a substantial shift in Sony’s strategic direction regarding virtual and extended reality technology. The company, which previously invested in VR development through its PlayStation VR platform and related initiatives, appears to be consolidating its focus away from the sector.

The sale to Meta is particularly notable given that the two companies are major competitors in gaming and hardware. Meta, through its Reality Labs division, has been aggressively investing in VR and metaverse technologies, making the acquisition of Sony’s extensive patent portfolio a significant competitive advantage. The patents likely cover fundamental VR hardware technologies and could strengthen Meta’s intellectual property position in the space.

Sony’s exit from the VR sector suggests the company may be reallocating resources toward other technology priorities or determining that the VR market’s current trajectory does not align with its long-term strategy.
