The Lord of the Rings D&D Books Smash Crowdfunding Record

Free League Publishing has achieved a crowdfunding milestone with their latest Kickstarter campaign for The One Ring, a tabletop role-playing game based on J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings. The campaign raised $2.6 million, breaking the publisher’s previous record of $1.7 million from their 2021 campaign for the game’s second edition.

The new funding will support the development of revised game rules, an expanded bestiary, and a new campaign book. Lead designer Francesco Nepitello explained that the iterative design process involved significant reflection on the original rules, noting that most game designers are naturally inclined to refine and reconsider their creative choices. He revealed that he initially considered developing a full third version of the game but ultimately decided against that approach after playing with friends.

Free League Publishing is known for developing tabletop adaptations of popular intellectual properties, including Alien, Blade Runner, and Invincible, in addition to The One Ring. The publisher’s success with The One Ring crowdfunding demonstrates strong community interest in high-quality tabletop RPG adaptations of beloved franchises.
