Wizards of the Coast union expands, demands company stop pushing generative AI

Employees at Wizards of the Coast are expanding their unionization efforts and demanding the company stop pushing generative AI technology. The Dungeons & Dragons team and Team X (which develops Magic: The Gathering and Duel Masters) are joining the existing Arena team union to form the Wizards of the Coast-CWA (UWOTC-CWA).

The Arena team unionized in April and subsequently won its union election, but Wizards did not voluntarily recognize the union at that time. The company has until October 13 to voluntarily recognize the expanded union unit covering all three teams. If Hasbro declines to grant voluntary recognition, the union must file with the National Labor Relations Board to proceed with formal recognition. This unionization effort represents a collective employee push against the company’s generative AI initiatives, demonstrating growing concerns about AI’s role in game development.
