Xbox restates plans for next-gen Project Helix to be a “family of devices”, stressing “many players will be on the go”
Microsoft has reiterated its strategy for the next generation of Xbox consoles, known as Project Helix, confirming it will launch as a “family of devices” rather than a single machine. During a company town hall, Xbox CEO Asha Sharma outlined the company’s approach to the console generation after the current Xbox Series X/S, stating that a dedicated home console will remain a priority while also acknowledging the need for a portable, on-the-go gaming device.
“There is not one device that fits all,” Sharma said, explaining the rationale behind the multi-device strategy. The approach reflects Xbox’s recognition that gaming is increasingly mobile, with many players preferring to game while traveling or away from home. The company plans to maintain a strong flagship console experience while expanding its reach to portable gaming.
Sharma also highlighted the development of a new operating system for the next generation, describing it as looking “really good.” This new OS will presumably support both the stationary console and the handheld device, enabling a unified ecosystem across the family of hardware.
The strategy represents Microsoft’s response to the success of hybrid gaming devices, particularly the Nintendo Switch, and suggests Xbox is positioning itself to compete across multiple gaming form factors in the next console cycle.
