AMD’s Jack Huynh: FSR 4 Is Coming to Handhelds via a New Lightweight Model

AMD confirmed plans to bring FSR 4, its machine learning-based upscaling technology, to gaming handhelds by the end of 2026. According to AMD Computing & Graphics executive Jack Huynh, the company will pursue a two-pronged approach: releasing new APUs with native FSR 4 support while also developing a lightweight version of the upscaler that runs on existing integrated graphics hardware.

FSR 4 launched exclusively on Radeon RX 9000 graphics cards in early 2025, but has since been ported to older architectures through community efforts and official AMD support. The technology reached Radeon RX 7000 series GPUs in July 2026, with Radeon RX 6000 support planned for 2027. The handhelds expansion represents another significant step in AMD’s strategy to democratize the technology across its product lineup.

The announcement covers gaming handhelds, gaming laptops, and both new and existing APUs. However, it remains unclear whether existing handheld devices like the Steam Deck will receive official support or if FSR 4 will only ship with new hardware. While the Steam Deck has already demonstrated FSR 4 compatibility through informal implementation, AMD previously refrained from providing official support for older handhelds.
