Atari is bringing back one of its earliest 8-bit home computers

Atari is releasing a full-sized replica of the 800XL home computer, one of its earliest 8-bit personal computers from 1983. This faithful recreation is being developed in collaboration with game developer and publisher Plaion as part of Atari’s continued push to revive classic hardware alongside previous rereleases of the 2600 console and Intellivision.

The new 800XL features a built-in mechanical keyboard, staying true to the original design that allowed users to code their own games and applications using Atari BASIC. While retro enthusiasts will primarily use the device for gaming, the keyboard preserves the computer’s legacy as a platform for creative development, not just consumption.

The 800XL comes with 25 games pre-installed and supports additional titles via USB connectivity, making it accessible to players without the need for cartridges or external hardware. The device is now available for preorder at $219.99, with shipments expected to begin next year.

This release continues Atari’s strategy of capitalizing on nostalgia for classic gaming hardware. The company has successfully relaunched several iconic products in recent years, including the Atari 2600+ and the Intellivision Entertainment System. The 800XL revives Atari’s heritage as a computer manufacturer during the early 8-bit era, offering both gaming and programming capabilities to modern audiences seeking authentic retro experiences.
