Call of Cthulhu Officially Changes the Name of a Lovecraftian God
Chaosium Inc., the publisher of the tabletop role-playing game Call of Cthulhu, has officially changed the name of a deity within the Cthulhu Mythos. The change reflects evolving sensibilities around the Lovecraftian horror universe, which has remained a prolific source of inspiration for creators across multiple mediums since originating in H.P. Lovecraft’s works.
The announcement coincides with Chaosium’s launch of a Gamefound crowdfunding project for Call of Cthulhu: Old Ones, a new tabletop game for 2–4 players. In this title, players take on the roles of the Great Old Ones—the cosmic entities that traditionally serve as the unknowable antagonists in Call of Cthulhu gameplay. This reversal places players in control of the pantheon of godlike beings that populate Lovecraft’s cosmology, offering a fresh perspective on the universe where humans typically struggle against unfathomable horrors beyond mortal comprehension. The initiative demonstrates how established franchises continue to adapt and reinterpret classic source material to meet contemporary standards.
