Google and Unity unveil gen-AI game-making platforms, and demonstrate one of them with depressingly rubbish “dream game” Space Corridor

Google and Unity have announced new generative AI-powered game-making platforms aimed at lowering barriers to game creation. Google’s Playground is now available for testing in the United States, while Unity’s Unity Spark is forthcoming.

The platforms are designed to work together seamlessly: Playground enables creators to build games using text prompts, with the option to integrate Unity Spark for more advanced features including professional-level mechanics and high-fidelity 3D capabilities. This integration strategy allows creators to expand their initial concepts with production-grade tools.

The announcement underscores the gaming industry’s growing investment in generative AI for game development. However, the demo game Space Corridor, presented alongside the announcements, drew criticism and failed to demonstrate the technology’s compelling potential in a convincing manner.

Both platforms target creators with limited game development experience, positioning AI-assisted tools as a pathway to democratize game creation and make professional game development more accessible to a broader audience without requiring traditional programming or design skills.
