Hellraiser: Revival review

Hellraiser: Revival, a survival horror game developed by Saber Interactive, launched to mixed critical reception. The first dedicated video game adaptation of Clive Barker’s Hellraiser franchise—which originated with the 1986 novella The Hellbound Heart—faithfully recreates the series’ distinctive themes in an uncompromising first-person experience.

The game features graphic depictions of violence, gore, and BDSM content central to Barker’s vision. Players navigate hellish environments, solve environmental puzzles, and encounter the franchise’s iconic Cenobites while attempting to rescue a loved one from Hell. Key locations include an expansive mansion and a bondage club that explores the juxtaposition between consensual BDSM and otherworldly torture.

Reviews are notably divided at launch, with scores ranging from high praise to as low as 5/10. Supporters commend the game’s ambitious scope and faithful visual adaptation—some calling it the best Hellraiser entry since the original film. Critics, however, point to severe gameplay issues that undermine the experience despite the game’s conceptual ambition.

The single-player, story-driven title runs approximately 10 hours to completion. Its mature content and unconventional approach have sparked discussion about how the game portrays sensuality and BDSM compared to traditional violent horror games.
