A great indie studio is making a sequel to one of my favorite adventures 17 years later, for one simple reason: ‘We’re not getting any younger, and the world seems to be ending’

Indie developer Amanita Design has announced Machinarium 2, a long-awaited sequel to the beloved 2009 puzzle adventure. The original Machinarium, a wordless story about robots in a decaying city, captivated players with its distinctive visual style and romantic narrative. The sequel arrives 17 years after the first game.

Amanita CEO and designer Jakub Dvorský explained the timing with characteristic candor: “We’re not getting any younger, and the world seems to be ending, so if we were ever going to make Machinarium 2, now is the right time.” The statement reflects both personal considerations and broader societal anxieties that often drive creative decisions in the indie space.

In the years since the original Machinarium, Amanita Design developed several other acclaimed titles including Botanicula, Chuchel, Creaks, and Phonopolis, establishing itself as a studio known for quirky, inventive puzzle games and distinctive art direction. The announcement of a sequel marks a significant return to the franchise that made them famous.
