Microsoft seems very excited about its new magnetic USB Type-C charger for the Surface Laptop Ultra, but it don’t impress me much
Microsoft has announced the Surface Laptop Ultra and Surface RTX Spark Dev Box, positioning them as “the most powerful Surface devices ever.” Both devices are powered by Nvidia’s RTX Spark SOC and will launch on October 16, alongside other RTX Spark laptops from various manufacturers.
The Surface Laptop Ultra starts at $2,599, while the professional-focused Surface RTX Spark Dev Box is priced at $5,999. These premium price points reflect the high-end specifications required for power users and professionals. The Surface Laptop Ultra differentiates itself from competing RTX Spark devices through a new proprietary charging solution called “Magnetic Connect,” which uses a magnetic USB Type-C connector. Microsoft has prominently featured this innovation in its marketing, promoting it as a significant advancement in laptop charging technology.
However, the feature has not generated enthusiasm among tech reviewers and observers, who question whether magnetic USB Type-C connectivity represents a meaningful improvement over standard USB Type-C charging solutions already widely adopted across the industry. Critics suggest that while Microsoft is promoting Magnetic Connect as a key differentiator, it may not provide sufficient practical benefits to justify the premium pricing or convince consumers of its value proposition.
