Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 reveals pricey spawn options for DMZ, which offer rich players an enormous advantage over poor players spawning on foot

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4’s DMZ extraction shooter mode is introducing paid spawn options that have drawn criticism for creating pay-to-win mechanics. The new feature allows players to spend in-game currency to purchase premium spawn locations, including aircraft spawns, while players without sufficient funds must spawn on foot.

The discovery emerged from a progression trailer showcasing the Forward Operating Base (FOB), a central hub where players manage between-match activities. At the FOB, players upgrade weapons, customize operators, unlock skills, and use a 3D printer to craft items. These improvements form the out-of-match metagame system.

However, the highlighted spawn purchase system raises fairness concerns. Players willing to spend more in-game currency gain significant positional advantages with air spawns, while those with fewer resources are forced into less advantageous starting positions on the ground. This disparity could substantially impact extraction gameplay, where positioning and loadout flexibility are critical advantages.

The DMZ mode has been a focal point of Modern Warfare 4’s reveal cycle, with Activision gradually detailing its progression and gameplay systems. This latest feature has sparked community discussion about whether monetary advantages should influence core gameplay mechanics in competitive extraction shooters, where fair competition is typically expected.
