VisionQuest Showrunner Terry Matalas Didn’t Have to Worry Too Much About the MCU’s Bigger Picture — ‘We Pretty Much Did Exactly What We Wanted’ | NYCC 2026
Marvel Studios’ upcoming series VisionQuest made its final Comic Con appearance ahead of its Disney+ premiere on October 14, 2026. At New York Comic Con 2026, showrunner Terry Matalas joined the cast—including Paul Bettany as Vision, James Spader, Emily Hampshire, and Ruaridh Mollica—for an exclusive screening of the series’ pilot episode.
During the event, Matalas discussed the creative development process and addressed a key question about balancing the show’s story with the broader Marvel Cinematic Universe continuity. Despite the MCU’s intricate web of interconnected storylines and constraints, Matalas revealed that the writing team maintained considerable creative freedom.
“We pretty much did exactly what we wanted,” Matalas explained, indicating that Marvel Studios and executive Kevin Feige were collaboratively flexible during development. While the writers did consult with Feige on certain story concepts, these conversations didn’t result in significant restrictions on the creative vision.
This approach suggests a different production model from some other MCU television projects, where narrative continuity can sometimes limit storytelling options. By allowing VisionQuest more autonomy, Marvel appears to be giving Matalas the creative latitude to deliver a series that stands on its own while remaining connected to the broader MCU framework.
