Timeloop metroidvania Echo Weaver is the brave game that locks almost nothing off and challenges you to break it
Echo Weaver is a 2D timeloop metroidvania that takes an unconventional design approach by making nearly all abilities and progression mechanics available from the start of the game. Rather than gating content behind traditional power-ups and progression locks, the game challenges players to complete it using immediately accessible tools, encouraging experimentation and creative problem-solving.
Developed by Moonlight Kids, the game casts players as a perpetually rewinding robot boy investigating the collapse of an ethereal lunar civilization. Gameplay revolves around exploring overgrown biomes, examining ruined machinery, completing tasks for alien NPCs, and uncovering the protagonist’s origins through holographic flashbacks that reconstruct past events.
The design philosophy inverts the standard metroidvania formula, which typically gates progression through ability acquisition. By removing these locks, Echo Weaver trusts players to discover solutions independently and encourages sequence-breaking and non-linear exploration. This approach is framed as a bold departure that challenges players to find their own path through the game world rather than following a predetermined progression path.
