Intel to release new CPUs on old socket in early 2027 says Gigabyte - memory crisis making DDR4 desirable again
Intel is set to release new CPUs utilizing the LGA1700 socket in early 2027, according to motherboard manufacturer Gigabyte. The chip maker is preparing B760 and H610 motherboards to support these new processors, which will be based on existing Raptor Lake and Arrow Lake architectures that previously powered Intel’s 12th, 13th, and 14th generation processors.
The strategy represents an unusual move in the CPU market, as the LGA1700 socket last saw a major processor launch in 2023—nearly four years before the scheduled 2027 release. By extending the socket’s lifespan well beyond typical industry standards, Intel is diverging from the common practice of introducing new socket designs with each processor generation. The decision is partly driven by a current memory crisis that has renewed interest in DDR4 memory support, making these new processors potentially attractive to users seeking performance upgrades without requiring complete platform replacements, including new motherboards and memory modules. This approach allows existing LGA1700 system owners to adopt newer CPUs while maintaining compatibility with their current infrastructure.
