Marvel Darkhold Destiny Is Magic: The Gathering’s First Universes Beyond Set Of 2027

Wizards of the Coast announced Darkhold Destiny, Magic: The Gathering’s first 2027 Universes Beyond expansion, at New York Comic Con. The Marvel-themed set releases in April 2027 and tells an original story—a significant departure from previous crossover sets. Rather than adapting existing Marvel storylines, Darkhold Destiny features an entirely new narrative co-created by designers at both Marvel and Wizards of the Coast, centered around the cursed Darkhold tome and supervillains seeking to wield it.

The set will feature iconic Marvel characters including Doctor Strange, Thor, Ghost Rider, and Asgardians engaged against cosmic threats like Hela and Dormammu. Revealed cards include Magic (who transforms into Darkchild), Gargantos, and the titular Darkhold. The expansion will include standard and Collector booster packs, plus four pre-constructed Commander decks highlighting Marvel’s most famous magical characters and the Midnight Sons theme.

Darkhold Destiny also includes new mechanical treatments, scene boxes, and booster variants, along with a tie-in comic series written by Jackson Lanzing and Collin Kelly. A brand-new character created specifically for this set will debut in Marvel’s Infinity comic series.

This approach directly addresses long-standing player feedback about Universes Beyond sets—previous crossovers, while commercially successful, often felt disconnected from Magic’s fantasy aesthetic and lacked intricate storytelling. By granting artists greater creative freedom and developing Magic-specific mechanics alongside Marvel’s properties, Darkhold Destiny represents an evolution in the crossover strategy, bridging commercial appeal with game design integrity.
