PS5’s QSSR Might Not Run on Games with Older SDKs
PlayStation has announced QSSR (Quick Spectral Super Resolution), a new AI-powered upscaling technology developed in collaboration with AMD as part of Project Amethyst. The technology promises to deliver higher fidelity visuals and improved frame rates on PS5 consoles. However, a significant limitation has emerged: QSSR may only function on games built using newer software development kits (SDKs).
According to Digital Foundry reporting, existing games developed with older SDKs may not be able to take advantage of the new upscaling technology without developer intervention. This means that even current PS5 titles could require SDK updates from their developers to support QSSR functionality. The compatibility issue could potentially affect a large portion of the PS5’s existing library, creating challenges for both developers and players seeking to benefit from the performance improvements.
While QSSR represents an evolution of PlayStation’s existing PSSR upscaling technology, the SDK requirement could limit its adoption across the platform. Games like Final Fantasy VII Rebirth and Control are among titles expected to support the technology, but others may need developer updates to function properly with QSSR. The limitation raises questions about how broadly QSSR will be implemented across the PS5’s game library and whether developers will prioritize updating legacy titles to support the new tech.
