Sony agrees to transfer over 400 global VR patents to Meta following December 2025 agreement

Sony has agreed to transfer over 400 global virtual reality patents to Meta under an agreement signed in December 2025. The deal encompasses 419 VR patents total, with 180 filed in the United States and the remainder distributed across Japan, China, South Korea, Europe, and other regions.

The transfer has already begun, with Sony moving more than 40 patents to Meta between June and September 2026. These patents cover foundational VR technologies including virtual reality, augmented reality, mixed reality, and head-mounted display systems—essential technologies for next-generation immersive platforms.

The patent transfer marks a strategic shift for Sony following the February 2023 launch of its PlayStation VR2 headset at $549.99. The decision to transfer such a substantial intellectual property portfolio to Meta suggests Sony may be deprioritizing its own VR hardware development efforts. For Meta, the acquisition strengthens its competitive position in the VR market and supports ongoing development of its Quest platform and metaverse initiatives. The transaction reflects broader industry consolidation, with major technology companies strategically repositioning their patent portfolios to align with their long-term technological priorities. Sony’s patents represent decades of VR research, offering Meta valuable foundational technologies that could influence the competitive VR landscape for years to come.
