Street Fighter Movie Officially Reveals Its Big Animated Twist

The new Street Fighter movie is set in 1993, the same year Capcom released Super Street Fighter 2: The New Challengers in arcades. Capcom and Legendary’s film is steeped in ’90s aesthetics and will incorporate traditional 2D animation for significant portions of the story.

Director Kitao Sakurai revealed that the filmmakers have been keeping the animated sequences as a surprise element. The movie uses animation almost exclusively during flashback scenes, with this creative choice serving a specific purpose: avoiding “cheesy” moments during key emotional beats. The animation style draws inspiration from Japanese animation, providing a thematic and visual connection to the source material while maintaining the film’s commitment to its nostalgic ’90s setting.

This approach represents one of several throwback elements the filmmakers have woven into the movie adaptation. By blending live-action sequences with animated segments, the film aims to create a distinctive visual experience that honors the franchise’s history and cultural heritage. The technique suggests the filmmakers are taking a thoughtful approach to adapting the beloved fighting game franchise for the big screen.
