WoW: Forever dev says ’there’s a real longing for that slower, more deliberate pace’ in MMOs: ‘A deliberate pushback on this go go go nature’

World of Warcraft: Forever’s development team has revealed that player interest in slower, more deliberate gameplay is driving the game’s design philosophy. According to a developer speaking with PC Gamer, there’s “a real longing for that slower, more deliberate pace” in MMOs, representing “a deliberate pushback on this ‘go go go’ nature.” The developer suggested this shift may reflect broader cultural trends, citing modern information overload and constant digital notifications as context for players seeking more relaxed gaming experiences.

The scope of WoW: Forever has significantly expanded during development. Clay Stone, a team member, explained that the project’s initial internal pitch was modest—adding just four new dungeons to the vanilla experience. However, as enthusiasm grew, the scope snowballed to six dungeons, then nine. The team has also implemented class balance changes, such as giving paladins a taunt ability. Despite these additions, Stone noted that a minimalist version of the game remains—essentially vanilla World of Warcraft with only slight class adjustments—suggesting the core philosophy focuses on recapturing the original experience rather than major overhauls.

The game is currently in beta, with development driven by perceived player demand for a more measured approach to MMO design that contrasts with contemporary live-service games.
