YouTuber’s Channel Permanently Banned Over Censored Hellraiser: Revival Gameplay Video
A French YouTuber with over a decade of channel history and 190,000 subscribers has had their account permanently banned by YouTube for uploading gameplay footage of Clive Barker’s Hellraiser: Revival, despite attempting to censor the game’s explicit content.
The creator, known as J0nathan (xj0nathan), uploaded a gameplay video on September 23 featuring the game’s opening scene. Although they covered the nudity with black boxes and other censoring techniques, YouTube removed the video and subsequently terminated the entire channel for violating its sex and nudity policy. When J0nathan appealed the ban, YouTube responded that “explicit content that’s meant to be sexually gratifying isn’t allowed on YouTube,” upholding their decision.
Hellraiser: Revival, developed by Saber Interactive, features adult content in its opening sequence, including a topless woman and BDSM elements. This presents a significant challenge for content creators seeking to cover the game on YouTube, as even sanitized footage of the early gameplay appears insufficient to meet platform guidelines.
The incident raises important questions about how content creators should handle mature-rated games on YouTube. Despite years of community building and channel establishment, J0nathan’s channel was permanently removed over a single video, leaving their subscriber base without access to their content. The ban suggests that YouTube’s content moderation system may flag games with explicit opening scenes more aggressively, potentially discouraging coverage of titles like Hellraiser: Revival regardless of how creators attempt to censor problematic material.
