Star Citizen Single-Player Spinoff Squadron 42 Reemerges With Flashy New Trailer, Steam Wishlists, and Cast Confirmation
Cloud Imperium Games has announced significant updates for Squadron 42, the long-awaited single-player spinoff of space simulation Star Citizen. The studio released a new cinematic trailer showcasing gameplay and story elements, while announcing that Squadron 42 is now available to wishlist on Steam ahead of a planned Q2 2027 release.
The announcement included a full cast reveal featuring major Hollywood actors including Mark Hamill, Gary Oldman, Gillian Anderson, Ben Mendelsohn, and Henry Cavill. Squadron 42 is a spiritual successor to Wing Commander, the classic space combat series created by Chris Roberts, who is leading Squadron 42’s development. The game has been in production for over a decade.
Set in 2945 within the Star Citizen universe, Squadron 42 follows a story where the United Empire of Earth faces collapse from threats posed by outlaws and hostile alien forces. The game combines space combat, first-person shooter action, and cinematic storytelling. The release was originally planned for 2026 but was postponed to Q2 2027 to avoid competition with Grand Theft Auto 6. The Steam page listing represents a concrete development milestone and includes system requirements, signaling progress on a game that has faced skepticism due to Star Citizen’s lengthy development history and previous release date changes.
