Zach Cregger’s Mysterious New Sci-Fi Thriller Officially Gets a Promising Update

Following the massive box office success of The Backrooms, another viral internet horror phenomenon is being adapted for the big screen. The Backrooms, a creepypasta-based film about liminal spaces directed by YouTuber Kane Parsons, grossed over $400 million worldwide on a $10 million budget, demonstrating strong commercial viability for adapting online horror stories.

Building on this trend, filmmaker Zach Cregger (Weapons, Resident Evil) and screenwriter Brian Duffield (Whalefall, No One Will Save You) are developing a film adaptation of Siren Head, an internet horror phenomenon. The two are collaborating on the screenplay, with Duffield expected to direct. The project was announced in July, just weeks into The Backrooms’ theatrical run.

Siren Head, a tall creature from internet folklore, represents the next major viral horror property to receive film treatment. The project exemplifies a growing trend of streaming creepypastas and online folklore becoming valuable source material for major film productions. With The Backrooms proving significant audience appetite exists for these properties at the box office, studios appear increasingly willing to invest in adapting internet-born horror content to cinema.
