Final Fantasy Meets Dragon Quest in Square Enix’s Latest ’90s Remake

Square Enix is continuing its successful run of remaking 1990s games with Romancing SaGa 3: Destinies United, a reimagining of the original SNES title launching in 2027. The remake was previewed at New York Comic Con, where attendees experienced the game’s charming visuals and distinctive approach to turn-based combat.

The original Romancing SaGa 3 was known for its unconventional design, featuring non-linear storytelling, multiple protagonists, and a variety of unusual minigames. The remake appears to preserve these elements while modernizing the presentation, with Square Enix emphasizing the game’s unique mechanics that set it apart from traditional RPGs of its era.

This project represents another chapter in Square Enix’s ongoing commitment to reviving its back catalog from the 1990s. The company has already found significant commercial and critical success with similar ventures, including the HD-2D remake of Live A Live in 2022 and the diorama-inspired Dragon Quest 7 Reimagined in 2026. These remakes demonstrate the company’s ability to refresh classic titles while maintaining appeal to both longtime fans and new players.

While the Romancing SaGa series has historically seen inconsistent international releases, the upcoming remake represents an opportunity to introduce the franchise to a wider global audience.
