Here come the weird and wonderful mods for the Steam Frame, as Valve drops the full CAD files for free

Valve has released the complete CAD files for the Steam Frame VR headset, opening the doors for widespread modding and custom accessory creation. The company provided blueprints for multiple components including the light blocker, head strap, battery housing, facial interface, core module, and controllers.

This CAD release enables any user with manufacturing tools—whether 3D printers, lathes, or injection molders—to design and create custom modifications for their Steam Frame, though modifications must remain non-commercial. The move democratizes the modification landscape for the relatively new VR headset.

Interestingly, the modding community was already ahead of the curve. Early Steam Frame recipients had begun prototyping homemade accessories and gadgets before the official CAD release, creating both practical improvements and experimental designs. These range from sensible utility modifications to more unconventional creations like DIY wrist straps and novelty skull stands.

Valve has announced that an official upgraded head strap is coming soon, featuring interchangeable batteries and off-ear speakers. By releasing the CAD files, Valve is encouraging community innovation while these official upgrades are in development. The move reflects an increasing trend among hardware manufacturers to support modding communities, particularly in VR where customization can significantly enhance user comfort and experience.
