Why alts are part of World of Warcraft: Forever’s core progression plans
Blizzard Entertainment is implementing a suite of incentives to encourage World of Warcraft: Forever players to create and develop alternate characters as part of the game’s core progression systems. Vice President and Senior Game Director Ion Hazzikostas outlined the developer philosophy in exclusive interviews, emphasizing that alts will serve multiple strategic purposes in the game’s ecosystem.
The incentive structure addresses both community and content goals. Creating lower-level alternate characters enables veteran players to better support new friends joining the game, improving the onboarding experience for newcomers. Alts also provide access to new leveling zones, dungeons, and encounters being added in future patches, allowing players to experience upcoming content from fresh perspectives.
Blizzard plans to introduce Legacy points as account-wide progression rewards unlocked through alternate characters, creating meaningful long-term engagement goals that extend beyond single-character progression. This approach reflects a broader design philosophy prioritizing sustained player investment through multiple active characters rather than concentrating progression on a main character. The strategy aims to strengthen community bonds by maintaining an active pool of higher-level players available to assist newer players, while simultaneously extending content longevity by encouraging multiple character playthroughs of new raids, dungeons, and zones.
