Asha Sharma: Xbox must make “hard choices” but still commit to building enduring new IP

Xbox has undergone significant restructuring throughout the summer, resulting in thousands of job losses and strategic divestitures. CEO Asha Sharma has clarified the company’s strategic direction: Microsoft will concentrate resources on its most prominent and profitable franchises, including Fallout, Call of Duty, Candy Crush, and World of Warcraft.

This shift represents a departure from Xbox’s previous approach of supporting a diverse portfolio of studios and game types. As part of this consolidation, several smaller studios have been affected—notably Ninja Theory, Double Fine, and Compulsion Games have either been spun off as independent entities or permanently shut down.

The restructuring comes as Xbox faces mounting pressure to improve financial performance and game output. By focusing on established, high-revenue franchises, Sharma indicates the company is making “hard choices” to ensure long-term sustainability. However, she has also emphasized that Xbox remains committed to developing new intellectual property, suggesting the company will balance its franchise-focused strategy with continued innovation.

This strategic pivot reflects broader industry trends toward consolidation, where major publishers increasingly rely on proven franchises rather than experimental or niche gaming experiences.
