Dragon Quest co-creator Yuji Horii releases new AI-generated game, and he says it took 30 minutes to make

Yuji Horii, the legendary creator of Dragon Quest, has released a new game built entirely with AI in approximately 30 minutes. The game, titled “Interrogation Room Komiya,” is a text-based police interrogation simulator where players select dialogue options to pressure a suspect into confession. The game is available to play online for free.

Horii shared the creation on X (formerly Twitter), highlighting the dramatic contrast between game development practices across decades. In 1983, when he created The Portopia Serial Murder Case, he independently handled every aspect of production: story, artwork, programming, and game design. Today, he demonstrates that AI tools enable developers without traditional artistic or technical skills to create functional games by simply providing instructions and prompts.

“It’s truly astonishing,” Horii commented on the technology’s capabilities. He emphasized that AI democratizes game creation, allowing solo developers to generate decent games even without drawing or programming expertise—a significant shift from the diverse skill sets required decades ago. The rapid turnaround—30 minutes from concept to playable game—showcases the efficiency gains possible with modern AI assistance.

Horii has previously praised AI technology’s potential in game development, and this project serves as a practical demonstration of those capabilities. The announcement coincides with ongoing anticipation for Dragon Quest 12, which was reannounced in May after substantial behind-the-scenes reworking. Square Enix has indicated the project remains far from completion.
