Round Up: The Reviews For Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse Are In

Konami’s Castlevania series makes its return with Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse, a new 2D action-exploration title developed by Evil Empire and Motion Twin, the team behind Dead Cells. Set 23 years after Castlevania III: Dracula’s Curse, the game centers on Rose Belmont, the daughter of legendary vampire hunter Trevor Belmont, as she carves her own path as a vampire hunter.

This is the first mainline Castlevania entry in over a decade. The collaboration builds on groundwork laid by the 2023 Dead Cells crossover event. Early reviews are predominantly positive, with critics praising the game as both a triumphant return for the series and a smart modernization of its classic formula. The release reflects Konami’s broader strategy of licensing its legacy properties to talented independent and smaller studios—an approach that has already proven successful with the recent Silent Hill revival.

However, not all critics are entirely satisfied. While praising the action gameplay, some reviewers question whether the game fully succeeds as a Metroidvania title, with one critic describing it as “a fantastic action game, a less than stellar Metroidvania.” The reviews suggest Belmont’s Curse delivers engaging vampire-hunting action but may not fully satisfy purists expecting a traditional exploration-focused experience.
